A Brief History of McAdenville

McAdenville, North Carolina, often referred to as "Christmas Town USA," is located in Gaston County and has a rich history tied to the textile industry. The town was founded in the 1880s by R.Y. McAden, a textile magnate, who established a cotton mill along the South Fork Catawba River. This mill became the focal point of the town, and McAdenville quickly grew into a mill village, with homes, a company store, and other amenities built for the workers and their families.

For much of the 20th century, McAdenville was a thriving mill town, with the McAden Mills playing a central role in the local economy. The town was typical of many Southern mill villages, with a close-knit community where generations of families worked in the textile industry. McAdenville's historic textile mills were among the oldest in the state, operating for over a century before the textile industry began to decline in the latter part of the 20th century.

What truly put McAdenville on the map, however, was its transformation into "Christmas Town USA." In 1956, the owners of the local mill began a tradition of decorating the town with Christmas lights, a tradition that has grown each year. Today, the town's holiday display attracts visitors from across the country, with over 500,000 Christmas lights illuminating homes, trees, and streets during the holiday season.

While the textile mills have since closed, McAdenville has successfully transitioned into a suburban community with a strong sense of heritage. Its famous Christmas lights continue to draw tourists, and the town has preserved much of its historic mill village charm, making it a beloved part of Gaston County.

  • The whole crew is very communicative and works quickly and efficiently. They are doing a lot of landscaping work for us. But they also do all of our pest treatments. We live in the woods, so we have an abundance of pests. This company is fantastic and really works to the best of their abilities...
