Wood Destroying Pest Control

Protect Your Home From Structural Damage.

Termites and other wood destroying pests are a serious problem for any homeowner. These small insects can cause extensive damage to a home over time, chewing through wood, flooring, and wallpaper. If left unchecked, they can eventually lead to its collapse. While there are a number of do-it-yourself termite control methods available, it is often best to leave termite control to the professionals.

Pest control companies have the experience and equipment necessary to quickly and effectively eliminate termites from your home. In addition, they can provide you with advice on how to prevent future infestations. If you suspect that you have a termite problem, don’t hesitate to call or schedule with Good Nature Pest Control for help.

How Do I Detect Termites In My Home?

There are a few telltale signs that you may have termites in your home. One is the presence of small holes in wood surfaces. Termites typically tunnel through wood, creating these holes as they go. Another sign of termites is the presence of wings near doors and windows. These wings are shed by termite swarmers as they leave their nests in search of new sites to colonize.

If you see these signs, it’s important to contact a pest control professional as soon as possible to have your home inspected for termites. Early detection is key to preventing significant damage.

How Much Does Termite Treatment Cost?

The termite control cost will depend on the size of your home, the type of termites you have, and the severity of the infestation. Additionally, if you have a large home, the termite control cost will be higher. It’s important to consider the overall value of a termite treatment, as it’s far cheaper than the cost of repairing termite damage, which can range from several hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars.

Where Do Termites Come From?

In most cases, termites enter a building through cracks in the foundation or through gaps around doors and windows.

Once inside, they begin to eat wood, starting with the softest parts first. As they eat away at the wood, they create hollow tunnels that weaken the structure of the building. Termites typically remain hidden within the wood, making them difficult to detect until extensive damage has been done.

When Are Termites Active?

Termites are most active in the spring and summer when temperatures are warm and the ground is moist. However, they can be active year-round in warmer climates. When the weather cools down, termites will go into a dormant state to survive the winter months. While they are less active during this time, they can still cause damage to your home if left untreated.

If you suspect you have a termite infestation, it is important to contact a pest control professional as soon as possible.

Other Types Of Wood Destroying Pests

Powderpost Beetles

Powderpost beetles are second only to termites in their ability to damage dry and seasoned wood. The term “powderpost beetle” is used to describe several species of small (1/8-3/4 inch long) insects that reduce wood to a flour-like powder.

Infestations typically are discovered after noticing the powder. This may also be accompanied by small, round “shot holes” in the wood surface. Property owners are more likely to see damage, rather than the beetles themselves, because the adults are cryptic and active mainly at night. Occasionally, the beetles may be found near damaged wood, or on windowsills since some are attracted to light.

The three most destructive groups of powderpost beetles are the lyctids, anobiids, and bostrichids. Each group contains several species capable of damaging wood materials.

Old House Borers

Old house borers preferentially attacks freshly produced sapwood of softwood timber. Contrary to their name, these hylotrupes are more often found in new houses. This may be because the beetles are attracted to the higher resin content of wood harvested more recently. However, if old wood is attacked, the damage is usually greater. As the nutrient content of wood decreases with age the larva has to consume larger amounts of wood

Carpenter Bees

Carpenter bees prefer unpainted and weathered wood. They especially like softer varieties such as redwood, cedar, cypress and pine. Painted or pressure-treated wood is much less susceptible to attack. Common carpenter bee nesting sites include eaves, rafters, fascia boards, siding, wooden shake roofs, decks and outdoor furniture. They may resemble bumblebees, but typically have a shiny, hairless abdomen.

Carpenter bees tunnel into wood to lay their eggs. Female carpenter bees excavate new tunnels in the wood for egg laying. Or they will enlarge and reuse old tunnels. Significant damage can occur when the same pieces of wood are infested year after year. The holes in the wood’s surface also facilitate moisture intrusion, rot and decay.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter ants are one of the most common pests in the United States. These hardy insects are attracted to moist wood, which makes them a particularly unwelcome presence in homes. While carpenter ants do not spread disease, they can cause significant damage to your property.

Because they tunnel through wood, carpenter ants can weaken the structure of your home and create entry points for other pests. In addition, carpenter ants are often difficult to control once they’ve infested a property. If you think you have carpenter ants, it’s important to contact a pest control professional as soon as possible. Taking quick action can help to minimize the damage these pests can cause
